Leopard Fencing Goes 1-1 in Tri-Match

Nov. 13, 2006

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette fencing team hosted Cleveland State and arch-rival Lehigh on Friday night in a non-conference event. The Leopard women foil team received wins from foil captain Constance To and freshman Meghan Hayward, but were defeated by Cleveland State overall 7-2.

In saber action, the Leopards scored seven wins against Cleveland State. Annalese Maddox's two victories along with three wins from saber captain Luigi Camilleri and freshman Andy Barnousky were enough for the strong seven-win performance for the Leopards.

In men's foil and epee action, Lafayette received a solid performance from freshman Jarrod Rottau, who scored a 5-2 decision over Cleveland State's Tom Kotula. Lafayette also received a lone victory from freshman Banks Clark in the epee. However, the Rottau and Kotula victory were all the Leopards could total, falling to CSU 8-1 in the men's foil and epee.

Lafayette Epee vs. Cleveland State Women's Epee Because of the women's fencing rule, Cleveland State was the technical winner. On the strip, however, Lafayette outscored their opponents 7-2, with team captain Robert Boguski and Banks Clark each sweeping their bouts. Sophomore John Christian contributed with a win.

Lafayette began to refocus and come together against arch-rival Lehigh. The Leopards came out and dominated their local rival with a 6-3 epee win over the Mountain Hawks. Boguski, Christian, and Banks all recorded two victories each in the win. Lafayette Epee vs. Lehigh U. Epee

The foil team used the momentum to continue to keep the Mountain Hawks on their heels. The Leopard foil team bounced back from their performance against Cleveland State to record a nail-biting 5-4 victory over Lehigh. To and Rottau again sparked the Leopard victory, with senior Mike Zboray and freshman Sneha Shah also contributing to the win.

Lehigh returned the favor when its saber squad recorded its own 5-4 victory over Lafayette. Three wins from Camilleri and one from Maddox fell just short against the Mountain Hawks.

Cleveland State and Lehigh also squared off in the tri-match. CSU swept the Brown and White, winning 9-0 in foil, 7-2 in the epee, and 5-4 in the men's saber.
