Men's Golf Opens Spring Season At Lonnie Barton Invite

BLUFFTON, S.C. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette men's golf team headed south for its first competition of the spring season last weekend. The team finished tied for 14th overall at the Lonnie Barton Invitational, held on location by Long Island University at the Pine Crest Golf Club in Bluffton, S.C.

Following a solid fall season for the Leopards, freshman Anoop Shah took top honors for Lafayette, turning in a 168 (85-83) on the par-72, 7089-yard course. Shah finished tied for 44th in a field of nearly 100 golfers.

Junior Dave Rahal recorded rounds of 88 and 83 to finish tied for 55th with a 171. Three strokes behind, sophomore Pat Kelly shot a 174 (92-82) on the weekend. His 82 on Sunday marked the lowest round by Lafayette over the two-day span.

Freshman Steven Melnic nabbed himself a 76th-place finish behind a 181 (96-85) effort on the weekend.

Veteran Tom Palmer totaled a 185 (89-96) to kick off his final season at Lafayette. Also competing for the Leopards were sophomores Clint Smith and Chris Johnston, shooting a 189 and 194, respectively.

Jackson State's Wilburt Lynn III took top medallist honors, leading the Tigers to the title with a 147 (71-76). Rider and Fairfield finished second and third, respectively.

The Leopards are in action again this weekend, as the team travels to Sparkill, N.Y. to participate in the St. Thomas Aquinas Spring Invitational beginning on Friday.
