HAMDEN, Conn. (www.lafayette.edu) - Eric Trama scored the game-winning goal at the halfway mark of the fourth quarter to give Quinnipiac a 7-6 victory over Lafayette in non-league men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in Hamden, Conn.
Andrew Horton had three assists for the second straight match and added an unassisted goal to lead the Lafayette (0-2) attack. Josh Murray and Jon D'Ascoli found the net twice for the Bobcats (2-0), in their first season in the Great Western Lacrosse League, which includes Top 25 programs Notre Dame, Ohio State and Denver.
The squads traded three-goal bursts spanning the second period after Quinnipiac opened a 3-1 lead. Leo Stinson cut the deficit to 3-2 with six seconds left in the opening quarter. John Galassi scored early in the second and Mike Scolaro converted on a man-up opportunity to give the Leopards a 4-3 advantage with 6:17 left before the half. Horton netted Lafayette's first goal of the afternoon and assisted on the other three first-half scores.
Chris Griffin tied the match at 4-all before D'Ascoli gave Quinnipiac a 5-4 halftime lead with 2:21 on the clock. Murray extended the advantage with a goal at 10:17 in the third quarter.
Trevor Ortolano broke the Bobcats' run with 8:47 left in the third as the Leopards registered 13 shots in the stanza. Ortolano assisted on the game-tying goal by Stinson, his second score of the match, with 12:07 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The final goal of the day, a score by Trama off a pass from Eddie Morley with 7:30 left, proved to be the game-winner.
James Nastro made 13 saves while facing 28 shots for Quinnipiac, while Jeff Canfield stopped 11 of the Bobcats' 29 shots in goal for Lafayette.
Quinnipiac won 9-of-11 face-offs in the first half and 11-of-16 for the afternoon. The Leopards held a 31-30 edge in ground balls.
Next up for Lafayette is a match at Villanova on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
