DURHAM, N.C. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette fencing team capped the 2005-06 campaign with five student-athletes competing at the Mid-Atlantic/South NCAA Regionals hosted by Duke. The Leopards were one of 13 teams to participate at the Blue Devils' Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday.
Senior Andrew Kopelman led the Leopards and closed out his collegiate career with a run to the direct elimination round in the men's epee competition. The 32-seeded veteran finished the day 25th overall.
Also throwing themselves into the ring for Lafayette were a pair of seniors in Nate Landis and Mark Lodato. Landis finished 25th among sabres, while Lodato took 32nd in with the foil weapon.
Lodato was one of three Lafayette fencers to make the regional cut last weekend within the foil group. Junior Brendon O'Dea and sophomore Mike Zboray turned in 30th and 33rd place finishes, respectively.
Lafayette accounted for five of the 94 athletes competing on the men's side. The men began the day with the top seven from foil and epee and the top six from saber automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
