POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Andrew Walsh scored with 32 seconds left in the second overtime to give Marist an 8-7 victory over Lafayette on Tuesday night at Leonidoff Field.
Neither team scored more than two consecutive goals in a back-and-forth affair in which the Leopards scored three times in the fourth quarter, including the game-tying goal by Trevor Ortolano on an assist from Leo Stinson with 4:09 remaining in regulation.
Sean Burek scored all three of Lafayette's goals in the first half, each time answering a score by the Red Foxes, before Marist netted a pair of goals in the final 3:56 of the second quarter to lead 5-3 at intermission.
Ortolano scored the only goal of the third quarter with help from Andrew Horton with 9:33 left in the period, and Stinson leveled the score at 5-5 2:59 into the final stanza. Nick Hautau put Marist ahead just over two minutes later, but Ryan Spitz struck with 5:46 remaining to even the game at 6-all.
Ortolano's tying score came 49 seconds after Marist went ahead on Hautau's third goal of the game. The match was scoreless for 11:41 until Walsh delivered the game-winner.
Lafayette (2-8) held a 41-29 advantage in shots to offset a 14-6 edge in face-offs by Marist (5-4). Both teams were efficient in the clearing game, but the Red Foxes converted three-of-five man-ups opportunities while Lafayette was unsuccessful on its only extra-man chance.
Ryan Penner made 12 saves for the Red Foxes. Jeff Canfield was credited with nine stops for Lafayette.
Lafayette will travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to play Colgate on Saturday at 3 p.m.
