LAKEWOOD, N.J. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette's golf team shaved 13 strokes off its day one score to finish in sixth at the Monmouth Hawk Invitational on Monday afternoon. The Leopards jumped up a spot from Sunday's opening round, posting a solid 315 in the final day at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club.
Four of six Lafayette players improved from day one on the par-71, 6746-yard course. The Leopards turned in a 643 (328-315) on the team leader board.
Freshman Anoop Shah stayed consistent and earned top billing for the Leopards with a 157 (78-79) overall. Shah tied three others for 11th in the field of approximately 60 golfers.
Chris Johnston fired a 77 on the day, which was Lafayette's best showing all weekend. The sophomore finished tied for 17th, shooting a 160 overall (83-77).
Junior Dave Rahal finished the outing tied for 31st with a 163 (81-82), while senior Tom Palmer and rookie Kenneth Suarez both finished one stroke behind with a score of 164. Palmer cut eight strokes off his 86 on Sunday to finish with a 78 on Monday.
Junior Kyle Manjuck bettered his first day by 13 strokes to round out the Leopards with a 175 (94-81).
St. Francis (Pa.) sophomore Matt Gowdy finished at two-over-par both days to claim top honors for the Red Flash, leading his team to the title with a 614 (305-309). Bucknell (308-312-620) edged Quinnipiac by a single stroke (312-309-621) to take second. Monmouth took fourth, followed by Sacred Heart, Lafayette, Fairleigh Dickinson, Wagner, Mount St. Mary's and St. Peter's.
Lafayette is back in action as the team hosts its own spring invitational at Center Valley G.C. beginning on Saturday and continuing through Sunday. An 8 a.m. shotgun start is scheduled both days.
