WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.- (www.lafayette.edu) - Monmouth junior Amy Hoyer received a pass from freshman Andrea Lopez in the 36th minute for the only goal of the game on Wednesday afternoon, as the Hawks held on for a 1-0 victory over Lafayette in women's action on Monmouth's The Great Lawn.
Monmouth netted the lone score of the match when Lopez played a ball behind the Leopards' defense, to find Hoyer. Hoyer beat Lafayette junior goalkeeper Mary Kate Erdman for her second goal on the 2006 season. Lopez recorded her team-leading fifth assist.
Erdman recorded four saves for the Leopards, while Hawks' sophomore Katie Buffa registered six saves to go with her second shutout of the year.
Lafayette looked as though they were going to get on the scoreboard early when junior Brittany Downham had a scoring chance in the 13th minute. However, a save by Buffa would turn out to be Lafayette's best chance in the first half.
Lafayette continued to pressure Buffa with second half chances late in the game from junior tri-captain Caroline Tuttle. Tuttle was turned away twice in the game's final five minutes to derail any thoughts of a Leopard comeback.
The defeat is Lafayette's first loss in four games, as the Leopards fall to 2-3-1 in the 2006 campaign.
Lafayette returns to the friendly confines of Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium on Friday night, when the Leopards host St. Peter's. Kick-off for the non-conference game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
