WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Lafayette women's soccer team dropped a hard fought 2-1 decision at Army on Friday night in the 2007 Patriot League opener for both teams. A Kelly Koreyva goal in the 78th minute tied the game at one before the Black Knights scored the game-winner with less than four minutes remaining.
After a scoreless first frame, Army opened the scoring in the second half when a loose ball from Pia White found the foot of Sarah Goss who put the ball past Lafayette senior goalkeeper Mary Kate Erdman from six yards out.
The Leopards responded just over 14 minutes later when an Alisa Chapla service found the head of Koreyva in the box. The goal was Koreyva's fourth of the 2007 campaign, a single season career-high for the Yardley, Pa. native, while the assist was Chapla's first career assist.
Minutes later, Chapla's attempt at giving Lafayette the advantage at the 83:33 mark was snuffed by Alex Lostetter as the ball headed toward the upper left half of the net. Chapla's attempt proved to be Lafayette's ast shot on goal.
Army's gamewinner came in the 86th minute as Elizabeth Butterbed used a Amelia Janoski corner kick and headed in the clincher of the Black Knight 2-1 victory.
Lafayette forced Army into seven offsides. Erdman tallied six saves for the Leopards while her Black Knight counterpart Alex Lostetter totaled four on the evening.
The Leopards will look to rebound on Tuesday when the squad travels to St. Peter's at 2 p.m. in the final non-conference game of the 2007 season. Lafayette returns to Mike Bourger Field on Oct. 12 for the Patriot League home opener against Navy at 7 p.m.
