EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's volleyball team (10-11, 2-3) handed Patriot League opponent Holy Cross (3-16, 0-5) a 3-0 defeat on Saturday afternoon in Easton, Pa. The win was the Leopards' second league victory of the season and their third 3-0 win the past four matches.
Senior Michaela Donohue fell one kill shy of a double-double as she finished with nine kills and 13 digs against the Crusaders. Freshman Katrina Racibarskas had 11 kills and seven digs, while Megan Carter led both teams with 40 assists.
The Leopards took the first game by a score of 30-28. Lafayette led for the entire game, leading by as much as six with a 26-20 score. The team closed out the victory on a kill from Racibarskas. The freshman recorded seven of her kills in the opening game while Donohue led both teams with seven digs. Carter tallied 18 assists.
Lafayette was forced to mount a comeback in the second game. After trailing as late as 22-23, the Leopards found their stride to come from behind and secure a 30-27 victory. Lafayette tied the match at 23 on a ball handling error by Liz Auger and went ahead permanently after a service ace from Carter made the score 24-23. Sophomore Cara Mulholland led the team with four kills in the second game while sophomore Kari Horn had six digs.
The third game was another close battle. The game was tied at 11 before the Leopards scored the next four points to pull ahead 15-11. Lafayette maintained a slim lead, holding a 27-24 edge before securing the victory on a service ace from Donohue. Mulholland and Donohue each added three kills and Carter chipped in four digs in the third and decisive game.
The Leopards continue Patriot League action when they travel to American on Friday, Oct. 12, and Navy on Saturday, Oct. 13.
