QUEENS, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette freshman Steve Serling scored his second goal of the season midway through the first quarter, but his efforts did not get Lafayette in gear enough to surpass St. John's, as the Leopards dropped a 9-3 decision on a frigid Tuesday afternoon.
Serling's goal at the 8:33 mark opened the scoring, as the Leopards (0-4) took advantage of their first of four man-up chances of the day. St. John's (1-3) went on to score the next five straight goals en route to its first victory of the young season.
After the Red Storm ballooned the deficit to 5-1, Lafayette sophomore middy Joe Howard netted his first goal of the season just 4:56 into the third period. However, St. John's proceeded to tally four consecutive insurance goals before senior midfielder Trevor Ortolano would beat St. John's keeper Dan Goldberg with six seconds on the clock for the final goal of the afternoon.
Sophomore Jeff Canfield protected the Lafayette net and came away with 10 saves, as did Goldberg for St. John's.
In addition to his goal, Howard helped Lafayette with a team-high five ground balls, while Canfield and junior co-captain Andrew Horton added three apiece.
Freshman Cane Napolitano won four face-offs, while his senior counterpart Jamison Caldwell won three for the Leopards.
Lafayette plays is third of four straight games on the road on Saturday when the team travels to Staten Island, N.Y. to take on Wagner at 1 p.m. The Leopards took a 14-5 victory from the Seahawks a year ago and are searching for their first win of the 2007 season.
