EASTON, Pa. - In front of a packed house on "Kids' Night," the Lafayette women's volleyball team (8-10, 1-2) swept rival Lehigh, 3-0, in a Patriot League match Friday night in Easton. The win was the Leopards' eighth-straight over the Mountain Hawks as well as their first league victory of the season.
Senior Michaela Donohue recorded a double-double with 14 kills and a team-best 10 digs. The freshman duo of Katrina Racibarskas and Kayly Elmer both finished with double-digits in kills with 14 and 11, respectively. Junior Megan Carter added 31 assists as Lafayette finished with a .298 hitting percentage.
The Leopards got off to a quick start, recording a 30-20 win in the opening game of the night. Donohue had five of her 14 kills in the match, while sophomore Kari Horn led the team with three digs. The Mountain Hawks managed to tie the score at eight early in the game, but that was as close as they would come as the Leopards went on to the easy 30-20 win.
The Leopards again jumped out to a lead in the second game, but Lehigh slowly chipped away at the lead. Despite at one point holding a 24-16 advantage after an ace from Horn, the Mountain Hawks came back to tie the game at 26. Lehigh would score just one of the final five points, however, as Lafayette held on for the victory.
The third game was won decisively by the Leopards, 30-17. Racibarskas led the team with six kills while Carter added in 11 assists. Lafayette quickly built a 10-point lead, 13-3, and increased that lead to 15 at 20-5. The Mountain Hawks would come back to get within nine of Lafayette (23-14) but as was the trend of the night, the Leopards pulled together to put the match away and defeat Lehigh.
No Lehigh player had double figures in kills and just one player, Dannielle Pimental, had double digits in digs with 13. With the 3-0 sweep of Lehigh, the Leopards recorded their first Patriot League victory of the fall while Lehigh fell to 0-3 in conference play.
The Leopards will take a break from Patriot League play when they travel to face St. Francis (N.Y.) on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m.
