EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's volleyball team came up just short in a 3-2 loss to NJIT in non-conference action on Tuesday night. Three Leopards recorded double-digit kill totals, led by Kayly Elmer, who recorded her third straight double-double with 14 kills and 16 digs.
Ally Taylor and Alana Taylor joined Elmer in double figures with 12 and 15 kills, respectively. Megan Carter tallied 47 assists while Kari Horn added a match-high 29 digs.
In a match that lasted just over two hours, Lafayette (6-13) won the opening set 25-20 in come-from-behind fashion. After trailing by as much as nine (19-10), the Leopards rallied to tie the match at 20 and won the final five points to secure the win on a kill by Katrina Racibarskas.
The second set was even closer with NJIT squeaking out a 28-26 win. Lafayette again trailed for much of the match before evening the score at 25. The Highlanders closed out the win, however, on a kill by Renata Pandolfo.
NJIT (12-9) also took the third set by a 25-22 score. Lafayette never held a lead in the match but kept it close, trailing by just two (24-22) before the Highlanders won the set on a kill by Baaba Hughes.
Lafayette won the fourth set in convincing fashion, 25-17. The Leopards never relinquished the lead and forced a fifth set after Carter's kill gave her team the eight-point victory in the fourth set.
The decisive fifth set was another back and forth battle with several lead changes. Ultimately it was the Highlanders who won the set and the match on a kill by Pandolfo, one of her 15 on the night.
The Leopards will return to league play when they travel to Holy Cross on Friday and Army on Saturday.
