EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's lacrosse team coasted to its second-straight victory on Saturday afternoon, as the Leopards offense put up 17 goals in a 17-2 triumph over Presbyterian College.
Sophomore goalkeepers Vinny DePasquale and Jason Montoya held the Blue Hose offense scoreless for the first 50 minutes of the contest, letting the Lafayette offense build a comfortable lead in the opening three quarters.
Sophomore midfielder Chris Ahern opened the Lafayette scoring less than three minutes into the game. A face-off win from Cesar Munoz led to a Matt Beck goal off an Ahern assist just 23 seconds later. The Leopards continued to push the Blue Hose defense, taking a three-goal advantage at the 5:13 mark of the first quarter off a Brett Djaha goal from Munoz.
A Ray Shalley tally kickstarted a seven-goal second quarter for the Leopards. A Steve Serling goal and back-to-back scores from freshman Tom Perini put Lafayette up 8-0 with 39 seconds remaining in the first half. Two final tallies from sophomore Kevin Dunbar and Perini in the final 21 seconds gave Lafayette a 10-0 lead at intermission.
Another Beck goal opened the second half scoring for the Leopards, just 18 seconds into the third quarter. Serling found the back of the net for his second goal of the afternoon at the 13:18 mark.
Sophomore attackman Matt Mersky at the 12:52 mark made the Lafayette advantage 14-0. Eight minutes later an Ed Daley pass found freshman Tyler Turri for a goal of his own at 4:33. Consecutive goals from Chris Prud'homme and junior John Galassi capped off the third quarter scoring, as DePasquale left with a 16-0 advantage.
Presbyterian got on the board at the 10:00 mark of the fourth quarter, before freshman Stefan Bauer ended the Lafayette afternoon with an unassisted goal with 4:57 remaining in the game.
Lafayette outworked Presbyterian 25-14 in ground balls, paced by sophomore Stewart Inman's four pick-ups.
DePasquale and Montoya grabbed 10 saves on the day, filling in for Jeff Canfield who was sidelined with an injury. Lafayette outshot the Blue Hose 42-21.
Lafayette returns to action next Saturday when the Leopards open up the 2008 Patriot League campaign against Navy. Face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Rappolt Field.
