EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette Invitational started today at Center Valley Country Club after a fog delay. Nine members of the Lafayette golf team competed on Saturday and the Leopards are 14th among the 25 field team with a team score of 308.
Senior Brandon Mitchel finished the first round just one over par (73) to lead the Leopards and place 15th. Classmate Steve Melnic shot an 80 junior Chris Johnston had a round of 84.
Rookies Tyler Ostrovsky, Erik Adolfsson and Cody Sumpter were no greater than five over par and were within one stroke of each other after the first 18. Ostrovsky led the freshmen class with a round of 75, Adolfsson finished with 76 and Sumpter shot a 77.
Freshmen Clay Solomon and Reed Valutas also competed and finished with rounds of 82 and 80, respectively. Classmate Andrew Carlins shot a 90 on the first day.
Drexel University leads the field with a team score of 289 and Brendan Madden of Duquesne shot two-under par for the top spot. It is a tight field with four teams tied for fourth place (Fairleigh Dickinson, Hofstra, Siena, St. Francis (Pa.)).
The Lafayette Invitational continues tomorrow with an 8 a.m. shot-gun start at Center Valley Country Club.
