EASTON, Pa. - In its final non-conference match of the regular season, the Lafayette volleyball team dropped a 3-0 home decision to NJIT on Wednesday night. The Leopards saw nine different players register kills.
Lafayette (11-7) lost in straight sets, 21-25, 16-25 and 22-25 as NJIT (14-5) collected its 14th win of the season.
Lafayette used the match to give its younger players valuable game experience, however, as all four freshmen took the court. Senior Cara Mulholland led the team with eight kills and fell one dig short of a double-double. Rookie Sarah Frohnapfel had a career night with 15 assists and three digs.
The Highlanders led from start to finish in the night's opening set and withstood a late Lafayette rally to capture the 25-21 win.
The Leopards also failed to see any share of the lead in the second set and NJIT closed out the eight-point victory with two straight kills.
Lafayette again made a late push in the third set. The Leopards jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead but NJIT tied it at seven-all on a Lafayette attacking error. The Highlanders upped their edge to 16-12 before Lafayette came back to tie it at 20-all on a kill from Christy Mebust. The score was tied again at 21 and 22 before NJIT scored the final three points to clinch the match.
Lafayette returns to league play with two road matches this weekend. The Leopards face Bucknell at 7 p.m. on Friday and Colgate at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
