EASTON, Pa. - In a steady rain throughout the entire 90-minute game, the Lafayette women's soccer team battled American in a Friday night Patriot League matchup. The Leopards tested the American defense multiple times in the second half, creating numerous chances before falling 1-0 at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
After two harmless American shots in the opening minutes, the Lafayette offense got into gear with a few chances of their own highlighted by a shot from freshman Bridget Becker that sailed just wide from 25 yards out.
The Eagles responded with a run through the Lafayette defense in the 24th minute and claimed the game's first goal. The two squads exchanged possessions in the midfield for the remainder of the first half as American took the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Lafayette established and maintained possession to open the second half, creating two chances in the opening minutes. A through ball into the American defense found freshman Jill Dozier on a breakaway in the 57th minute.
As the Eagle goalkeeper came out to take down the angle, Dozier blasted a shot that deflected off the goalie's foot and out of harm's way.
Minutes later, Becker found space in the American midfield and roped a left-footed shot past the goalkeeper, but off the left post to keep the Leopards down 1-0.
Becker's opportunity capped any legitimate scoring chances as the rain pelted the field and saw play in the midfield for the remainder of the game. The Leopards did manage two free kicks, as well as a corner kick in the closing minutes but were unable to capitalize.
The Leopards will take tomorrow to regroup before hosting Navy in the final home game of the 2009 campaign. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. at Oaks Stadium.
