Each week, the staff at GoLeopards.com spotlights a student-athlete in a Q&A feature. This week, Spotted on Campus asks some slightly different questions as men's lacrosse player Stefan Bauer filled us in on his once-in-a-lifetime trip to Dubai last summer.
Best part of traveling? Meeting people and seeing things that I would have never seen in the United States. It was great to live in a city where there were man-made islands, the biggest sky-scraper in the world, world famous gold markets and amazing beaches.
Worst part of traveling? The first day I arrived in Dubai it was 115 degrees. I was definitely not ready for the heat over there.
Weirdest food you tried? My Indian roommate in Dubai, Abhi, took me to an Indian restaurant and ordered me brain and he didn't tell me until after I ate the whole plate.
Best food you tried? One of my friends from Syria took me to a Shwarma (Middle Eastern sandwich-like wrap) stand on the street in Dubai; it was great.
One thing you wished you'd packed? Fellow attackman Matt Mersky.
Biggest adjustment when you first arrived? The culture is very different in Dubai than at Lafayette. Most women are fully covered and the majority of males wear a distashia, which looks like a white gown. I also don't know any Arabic so it was tough at times to communicate with people.
What was your teammates' and parents' reaction to your trip to Dubai? Everyone on the team was surprised and laughed when I told them. My mom was worried that I would be going over to the Middle East for two months without knowing anyone.
What classes did you take? How were they different than classes in the U.S.? I took three classes: Middle Eastern Cultures, Media in the Middle East and International Business. It was interesting because the teachers and students were from all over the world and had many different perspectives.
What do you still wish to accomplish? Win the Patriot League.
Opponent you're most looking forward to playing this season? Army. We lost in the last couple seconds to them last year; I can't wait to play them again.
The sport I'm worst at is: Basketball. If it weren't for my roommate, Tyler Silvey, I would be the worst basketball player on the team.
Something about me that others would be surprised to hear is: My family raises chickens and ducks.
Favorite thing about the fall? Thanksgiving, I have a big extended family so the annual football game in the back yard gets pretty competitive. My one uncle is still bitter about last year's game.
What are you most thankful for? My friends and my family.
Favorite TV show as a kid? The Simpsons
Favorite midnight snack? Milk and Oreo cookies
TV show I can't stop watching: Deal or No Deal
