EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette volleyball team capped off its 2009 home season with a 3-1 win over Patriot League foe Bucknell. In what was a balanced attack, four different Leopards reached double-digit kill totals.
The Leopards honored the three members of its senior class - Kari Horn, Cara Mulholland and Ashton Rossi - prior to the start of the match.
Lafayette (13-12, 4-8) lost the first set 23-25 before rebounding to win the next three, 29-27, 25-20 and 25-19.
Junior Kayly Elmer finished with a team-best 14 kills and hit for a .520 attacking percentage. Mulholland and sophomore Alana Taylor added 13 kills apiece while Katrina Racibarskas had 11. Rossi led all players with 47 assists.
The Leopards dropped the opening set 25-23. Trailing 23-19 late in the set, Lafayette made an attempted comeback, closing it a one-point Bucknell lead (24-23) after an Alexandra Russo kill but Katie Baumgarten ended the action with a kill.
It was an intense battle in the second set, as the lead changed hands throughout the course of play. It was the Leopards who came out on top of a 29-27 decision thanks to an attacking error by Bucknell's Anne Ellenberger.
Bucknell (8-16, 4-8) never got more than 20 points in the ensuing two sets. Lafayette won a 25-20 third-set decision which was clinched on an Elmer kill.
The Bison managed only 19 points in the fourth and final set and Mulholland ended the match with her 13th kill of the afternoon.
The Leopards have one weekend of Patriot League play remaining. They take on Army on Friday at 7 p.m. before facing Holy Cross on Saturday at 4 p.m.
