BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. - The Lafayette women's volleyball team got its 2009 season started with a dominant 3-0 sweep of St. Francis (N.Y.) on Wednesday night.
Lafayette (1-0) won in straight sets 25-17, 25-15 and 26-24. Senior Cara Mulholland (14) and junior Kayly Elmer (13) combined for 27 of Lafayette's 43 kills. Mulholland also added nine digs while Elmer contributed six. Senior Ashton Rossi led both squads with 36 assists. Sophomore Alana Taylor added a match-high four block assists while adding one solo block.
The first set remained close late with the score tied at 17 before the Leopards reeled off eight consecutive points to pull away for the victory.
Lafayette never trailed in the second set, coasting to the 10-point win. At one point the Leopards had a streak of six unanswered points and an attacking error by Linnea Wannemacher handed St. Francis (0-4) the second set loss.
The third set was the closest of the evening as there were seven score ties during the course of play. Lafayette led by as many as four (18-14) but the Terriers came back to knot it up at 24. Elmer and Taylor came through for the Leopards with back-to-back kills to finish off St. Francis and give their squad a 1-0 start to its season.
The Leopards return home this weekend to host their annual Lafayette College Volleyball Tournament. Play opens Friday with two matches beginning at 4 p.m.
