EASTON, Pa. - The Leopards not only picked up their sixth shutout of the season with a 2-0 win over Villanova on Wednesday night, they also improved to a perfect 4-0 at home this fall. Lafayette has now won two straight games and four of its last six.
B.J. Glenn continued his scoring streak, netting one of two Lafayette goals, his fourth of the season. He also added an assist, his first of the year. Freshman Sean Peckham also scored his fourth goal of the fall and that duo has now combined for eight of the Leopards' 10 goals.
Goalie Andrew Pianko saw his first time between the posts this season and picked up right where regular starter Philip Nelson left off, making four saves to shut out the Wildcats. Lafayette, which now stands at 6-2-1 this season, improves to 5-0-1 all-time against Villanova.
The Wildcats actually out-shot the Leopards 8-6, including a 3-1 advantage in the first half. Those first 45 minutes featured limited scoring chances for both sides and the final 24 minutes passed without a shot from either team keeping it a 0-0 ballgame at the midway point.
The second half was a stark contrast to the first as it took Peckham less than two minutes to break up the shutout. Josh Brown received the ball on the right endline and passed the ball to Glenn. Glenn fired a cross to Peckham who put it past Villanova goalie Chris Bresnahan.
Less than 10 minutes later the Leopards struck again. This time it was Blake Fink who assisted Glenn as Glenn fired a ball from 30 yards out into the upper right corner of the goal, upping Lafayette's lead to 2-0.
The Lafayette defense stifled the Wildcats for the remainder of the game as Villanova took only three more shots in the match and none over the final 21-plus minutes of action.
The Leopards return to league play this weekend when they host archrival Lehigh on Saturday at 7 p.m. Saturday also marks the program's annual Alumni Day and there will be a tailgate at the Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex prior to the start of the match.
