EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's soccer team entered Tuesday's match against Princeton looking to end a two-match losing streak. But the red-hot Tigers, who were riding a five-match win streak of their own, earned the win with a 3-0 victory at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
The three goals allowed are the most surrendered in a game by the Leopards this season. The loss, which moves Lafayette to 5-5-2, is also their first defeat by multiple goals in 2010. Princeton improves to 7-3-1, matching their longest winning streak since 1989 with six consecutive victories. The explosive Tigers have scored three goals in each of the six wins in the streak.
The match nearly went to halftime without a goal, but Princeton broke through just before the break via a Teddy Schneider goal. Lafayette goalkeeper Andrew Pianko challenged a loose ball in front of the net, which allowed Colby Hahn to flick a pass to Schneider for the contest's first tally at 41:06.
The Tigers struck again just after halftime, courtesy of an unassisted goal off the foot of Patrick O'Neil. O'Neil dribbled through a pair of Leopard defenders and unleashed a rocket from the top of the box that bounced off the crossbar and down beyond the goal line to run the score to 2-0 in favor of the visitors at 52:14.
Brandon Busch added an insurance tally at 86:24, scoring from the top of the box off a pass from Dylan Bowman to bring the score to its eventual final of 3-0.
Pianko made five saves for the Leopards, while Peter Adubato added a defensive stop. Sean Lynch stopped three shots to post a clean sheet for the Tigers.
Lafayette, which was outshot by an 18-10 margin, got shots on goal from Sam Feldbaum, B.J. Glenn and Brandon Turner.
The Leopards are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 16 as Patriot League play resumes at Colgate. Lafayette is currently 1-2 in league matches. The pitch at Oaks Stadium will host its next men's soccer match on Oct. 19 against Cornell at 7 p.m.
