EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's soccer team took just one shot on goal against Cornell on Tuesday night, but that one shot was all the Leopards needed to down Big Red in overtime, 1-0. Freshman Jeff McLaughlin provided the golden goal in the 92nd minute - the first score of his career - to secure the victory.
Lafayette snaps a four-match losing streak with the victory, evening its overall record at 6-6-2. The Leopards are now 2-2-2 in 2010 when a match goes beyond 90 minutes. Cornell drops below .500 at 4-5-4 on the season.
McLaughlin's tally came just 1:54 into the extra frame. Sophomore Sean Peckham was fouled and awarded a free kick from around 25 yards out. A set piece drawn up by head coach Dennis Bohn worked to perfection, as Peckham launched a ball to McLaughlin, who knocked it past Big Red goalkeeper Rick Pflasterer to send the crowd at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium home happy.
McLaughlin's first career goal makes him the eighth Leopard to find the back of the net in 2010. The assist for Peckham ups his team-best point total to 10 (3-4-10).
Junior Graham Heydt, making his third career start, stopped both of Cornell's shots on goal to post the second clean sheet of his collegiate tenure.
The Leopards outshot Cornell, 6-5, though Big Red took two shots on target to Lafayette's one. The visitors also held the edge in corner kicks, 4-3.
The Leopards resume Patriot League play at home this Saturday, as Army visits College Hill for a 7 p.m. contest. The match will be streamed live via LSN All-Access.
