EASTON, Pa. - After coming out on the positive side of a one-goal victory last Saturday at Bucknell, the No. 8 Lafayette men's lacrosse team came out on the short end Sunday afternoon, seeing its valiant comeback effort fall short against No. 11 Drexel.
Lafayette turned to the Serling brothers to ignite the attack and exemplify the 60-minutes of lacrosse that has become the expectation by this 2010 squad.
Trailing 11-7, senior goalkeeper Vinny DePasquale made one of his many impressive saves on the afternoon and immediately generated the attack off the save at the 12:15 mark of the final quarter. DePasquale heaved a 60-yard pass right into the stick of senior co-captain Steve Serling. Serling made one ball fake and found the back of the net to cut the Dragon lead to 11-8.
The goal seemed to energize the Leopards, as Serling began to take over, notching another goal with 6:37 remaining to trim the deficit to 11-9.
After Lafayette won the face-off, the Leopards turned the ball over. On the ensuing clear, sophomore defenseman Paul Hammer and senior Stewart Inman doubled a Dragon attackman on the far side to force a Drexel turnover and retain Lafayette possession.
Then, with 1:05 remaining in regulation, after a Lafayette turnover in its offensive zone, Serling intercepted a pass and beat the Dragon goalkeeper to tie the game at 11 and send the over 1,500 fans into a frenzy.
However, Drexel had its answer. After winning the face-off and maintaining possession on a key 50-50 ball, Adam Dennis found the back of the net on a very limited angle with 15 seconds remaining to give the Dragons the decisive goal and 12-11 victory.
Lafayette trailed 6-3 at the 14:54 mark of the second quarter before rattling off three consecutive goals from senior co-captain Matt Mersky, Steve Serling and Colin Serling.
Drexel responded with two goals before halftime to take an 8-6 lead into halftime. The Dragons opened the second half scoring and took another three-goal advantage before junior attackman Stefan Bauer put a Brett Djaha pass between the pipes with 8:20 remaining in the third quarter.
Lafayette falls from the ranks of the unbeatens, leaving only Maryland and North Carolina still undefeated in 2010. The Leopards finish up their two-game homestand on Saturday with a non-conference meeting against Mount St. Mary's. Face-off is set for 1 p.m. at Rappolt Field.
NOTES:
Junior attack Tom Perini was held without a point for the first time in 20 games, dating back to April 20, 2008. Perini was shadowed by a Drexel short stick the entire afternoon and only registered two shots on the day.
DePasquale has now tallied double-digit saves in six of Lafayette's first seven games.
Lafayette's 6-1 start is still the best in school history through seven games.
