LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Senior Justin Kamine found the back of the net in the 76th minute on Wednesday afternoon to guide the Lafayette men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the host Broncs from Rider. Sophomore Kyle Scharfenberg also scored for the Leopards, and senior goalkeeper Andrew Pianko stopped six shots in the season-opening victory.
With the win, Lafayette starts at 1-0 for the fifth consecutive season. Rider, which was also opening its season on Wednesday, falls to 0-1.
Kamine's goal, which was the third game-winner of his career, came off of a direct kick by senior Stephen Macurdy. Macurdy, an All-Patriot League player as a sophomore who missed all of 2009 with an injury, notched the assist in his first contest since Nov. 14, 2008.
The tally from Scharfenberg was unassisted, as the sophomore forward buried a loose ball in the front of the net in the contest's 8th minute. His first career goal gave the Leopards a quick 1-0 advantage.
The lone Rider goal came on a 25-yard strike off the foot of Sal Lubrano, who took a pass from Joshua Wright. That shot in the 24th minute was the only one of the Broncs' seven shots on goal to get by Pianko, who made a pair of saves to preserve the 1-1 deadlock just minutes prior to Kamine's game-winner.
Both teams managed 12 shots in the contest, with six Lafayette offerings on target as compared to seven from Rider. Matt Perrella made four saves in the losing effort for the Broncs.
The Leopards open up the home slate this weekend, as Bourger Field hosts the Lafayette Puma Soccer Classic. Lafayette will challenge Stony Brook on Friday at 5 p.m. and then returns to the pitch on Sunday for a 2:30 p.m. match against Temple.
