NEW YORK - The Lafayette volleyball team had its three-match winning streak snapped on Friday night, falling to the host Columbia Lions in straight sets at the Columbia Volleyball Classic. Senior co-captain Kayly Elmer had a team-best nine kills for the Leopards, and freshman libero Mackenzie Larsen led all players with 15 digs.
With the loss, Lafayette falls to 3-4. Columbia evens its record at 2-2 in victory.
Freshman Karissa Ciliento added six kills for the Leopards, and junior Alana Taylor chipped in with three finishers. Sophomore Sarah Frohnapfel ran the Lafayette offense and racked up 21 assists.
Larsen's 15 digs mark her fifth-consecutive match with double-digit digs. Junior Christy Mebust had seven digs and also landed a pair of service aces.
The Leopards' offense struggled to a hitting percentage of just .093 (26-16-107). The Lions, led by 12 kills from Megan Gaughn, hit .359 (42-9-92) and dropped in nine service aces en route to winning by set scores of 25-11, 25-17 and 25-17.
Play at the Columbia Classic will conclude tomorrow. Lafayette challenges Iona at 1:30 p.m. and then plays Central Connecticut State at 4:30 p.m.
