NEW YORK - The Lafayette volleyball team got 18 kills from senior co-captain Kayly Elmer, including the 1,000th of her career, on the final day of the Columbia Classic. However, the Leopards were bested by both Iona (3-0) and Central Connecticut State (3-1) at the New York City tournament.
The Leopards now stand at 3-6 in the 2010 campaign.
Elmer, already fourth on the Leopards' all-time kills list with 1,011 stands 61 finishers shy of Michaela Donohue '08's third-place total of 1072 kills. Veronica Canto-Ponce '07 holds the program record with an even 1,600 kills.
Junior Alana Taylor had 13 kills in the pair of matches, and senior co-captain Katrina Racibarskas added a dozen finishers, five service aces and four blocks in seven sets of work. Freshman libero Mackenzie Larsen paced the back row with 17 digs on the afternoon.
The Leopards were swept by Iona in the first match of the day, dropping the decision by set scores of 25-19, 25-8 and 25-23. The Gaels, who improved 6-3 after the victory, hit .455 (42-7-77) in the three-set win.
Against Central Connecticut State, Lafayette won the first set by a 25-19 tally. The Leopards hit .303 (11-1-33), led by Taylor's four kills on seven errorless swings. The early advantage would not hold up, however, as the Blue Devils took the next three frames by scores of 25-14, 25-10 and 25-14. The CCSU back row was solid, out-digging the Leopards, 71-49, with four players recording double-digit digs. The New Britain, Conn. squad also recorded nine blocks in the match to Lafayette's four.
The Leopards will play one more weekend tournament in the non-conference season. Kirby Sports Center will serve as host to another round of matches this weekend as Delaware State, La Salle and Quinnipiac visit College Hill for the Lafayette College Tournament. Action begins at 3 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
