PHILADELPHIA - The Lafayette men's soccer team played Penn to a 1-1 deadlock for 90 minutes in Philadelphia on Sunday. Unfortunately for the Leopards, however, the Quakers notched the game-winner on a penalty kick just 1:22 into overtime to grab a 2-1 victory. Sophomore Kyle Scharfenberg scored the lone tally for Lafayette on an assist from senior Stephen Macurdy.
The loss is the first setback of the season for the Leopards, who now stand at 3-1-1. Penn remains perfect at 4-0 in 2010.
Lafayette got on the board first, as Scharfenberg found the back of the net in the 16th minute, heading in a corner kick off the foot of Macurdy. The goal was the second for Scharfenberg on the season, while the helper by Macurdy was his second as well.
The 1-0 lead held into the intermission, as the host Quakers failed to record a shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes. Penn would next the equalizer early in the second frame, however, courtesy of Thomas Brandt goal off a rebound in the 51st minute.
The 1-1 deadlock stood through regulation, thanks in large part to Leopards' senior goalkeeper Andrew Pianko, who made all four of his saves on the evening after the Quakers' first goal.
The extra period was short-lived however, as a Lafayette foul resulted in a Penn penalty kick just 1:22 into the frame. Loukas Tasigianis made the free chance count, burying the golden goal chance to give the Quakers a 2-1 victory.
Lafayette outshot Penn, 11-10, but Quakers' goalkeeper Ben Berg stopped six of seven shots on goal to facilitate the victory for the home team.
The Leopards will look to bounce back next weekend at the Colgate Raiders Adidas Classic in Hamilton, N.Y. Lafayette will save its meeting with host Colgate for Patriot League play, but the Leopards will square off with non-conference foes Binghamton and Vermont on Sept. 17 and 19.
