EASTON, Pa. - Underclassmen and veterans alike did their part for the Lafayette volleyball team on Friday night against Princeton. On the younger side, sophomore setter Sarah Frohnapfel dished out 25 assists, and freshman Mackenzie Larsen, seeing her first action at libero, paced the defensive effort with 11 digs. Meanwhile, senior co-captains Kayly Elmer and Katrina Racibarskas combined for 18 of the Leopards' 31 kills. However , the full team effort was not enough on day one of the Lafayette College Volleyball Tournament, as the visiting Tigers exited Kirby Sports Center with a 3-0 victory.
Lafayette falls to 0-3 with the loss, and Princeton opens its season victoriously at 1-0.
Frohnapfel's complete line consisted of two kills (2-0-3, .667), 25 assists, five aces and four digs. Junior Alana Taylor chipped in with four kills and two solo blocks, while sophomore Kaitlynn Zoller and freshman Karissa Ciliento had two kills apiece. Sophomore Alexandra Russo recorded three kills and was a force in the back row with seven digs.
Also on the defensive end, junior Christy Mebust had seven digs, and Elmer added five. Racibarskas matched Taylor with a pair of blocks, while Russo had a hand in one Lafayette rejection.
The Tigers, who are just three years removed from their last Ivy League Championship, were led by a double-double (13 kills, 11 digs) from Lydia Rudnick. Chelsea Parker (12 kills) and Cathryn Quinn (10) both joined Rudnick with double-figure kills. Molly Bagshaw ran the offense to the tune of 41 assists, and CC Lobben had a match-best 15 digs from the libero slot.
The Lafayette College Tournament resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. as the Leopards challenge Fairleigh Dickinson. Princeton will meet St. Peter's at 12 p.m. and the Knights at 3 p.m. The tournament concludes with Lafayette back on the court against the Peahens from St. Peter's. Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Peter's opened action today with the Knights claiming a 3-1 victory.
