EASTON, Pa. - Sophomore Sean Peckham buried a penalty kick in the 27th minute to notch what would be the match's only goal as the Lafayette men's soccer team defeated Temple, 1-0, to win the 10th annual Lafayette Puma Soccer Classic. Senior goalkeeper Andrew Pianko had five saves to register his first shutout of the season.
Lafayette, which defeated Stony Brook by a 3-1 mark on day one of the home tournament, starts a season at 3-0 for the first time since 2006. The Owls fall to 0-1-1 in the young 2010 campaign.
The contest was tightly officiated throughout, with a total of 46 fouls called and 10 cards (nine yellow, one red) issued. The Leopards were awarded their penalty kick when senior Sam Feldbaum was tripped by Temple goalkeeper Bret Mollon with a clear path to the goal. Lafayette Head Coach Dennis Bohn elected to give the try to Peckham, who found the back of the net for his first goal of the season and the fourth of his collegiate career.
Pianko posted the clean sheet, his first of the year and eighth of his career, after stopping all five of the Owls' shots on net. The senior keeper also made several key challenges on Temple corner kicks. Mollon was saddled with the loss in goal for the Owls, though he did stop the only Lafayette shot on goal aside from the penalty kick. For his effort, as well as his clean sheet in the Owls' 0-0 draw with Colgate on Friday, Mollon earned a slot on the All-Tournament Team.
The Leopards landed four players on the All-Tournament Team, including Pianko. Feldbaum and sophomore Rob Bedson, both of whom scored against Stony Brook on Friday, and sophomore Blake Fink all earned the honor as Lafayette swept the competition.
Other members of the All-Tournament Team are Mike Reese, Jeff Leach and Steven Miller from Colgate, Wilber Bonilla from Stony Brook and Homero Rodriguez from Temple.
Lafayette is back in action this weekend with matches at Villanova on Friday and at Penn on Sunday. In total, the Leopards will play four road contests before returning to their home pitch on Sept. 25 for the Patriot League opener against Holy Cross. The 3 p.m. match at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium will also be the squad's Alumni Day.
