WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshmen Julian Plummer and Tom McCutcheon each netted their first career goal to lead the Lafayette men's soccer team to a 2-0 Patriot League win at Holy Cross on Saturday in Worcester, Mass. Goalkeeper Graham Heydt made four saves to record his fourth shutout of the season.
With the win, the Leopards improve to 5-2-2 on the season with a 1-0-1 mark in Patriot League play. The Crusaders now stand at 0-2-0 in league action and 1-7-2 overall. Lafayette is unbeaten in its last five (3-0-2) Patriot League matches as well as in its last 11 meetings (8-0-3) with Holy Cross.
Lafayette, which had not scored or allowed a first-half goal this season, got on the board just 9:27 into the match. Sean Peckham headed a ball into the box, which led to attempt by Kyle Scharfenberg. The junior's strike went wide, but was redirected by Plummer past Holy Cross keeper Michael Thompson to put the Leopards on top, 1-0. Plummer's goal was his first, while Scharfenberg's assist was his first helper and third point of 2011.
The Leopards got on the board again in the opening frame as McCutcheon found the net for the first time in his career, assisted by fellow freshman Chandler Fraser-Pauls. The tally in the 35th minute marked the first time that Lafayette scored more than one goal in a match since the season-opening win over Rider, as well as the first time this season that the Leopards owned a multiple-goal advantage.
The 2-0 cushion stood up due to four saves by Heydt (3-2-2). The senior's second-straight clean sheet lowers his goals-against average to 0.40 and improves his save percentage to .912 in 670 minutes in net. Heydt is yet to allow a goal in Patriot League play.
Thompson (1-5-2) made four saves for the Crusaders, as Lafayette outshot the home team by a 14-11 count.
The Leopards return to Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium on Oct. 4 for a 7 p.m. visit from in-state foe Villanova. The Wildcats, who play at Seton Hall this evening, as currently 3-4-2. Patriot League play resumes on College Hill on Saturday, Oct. 8 against historic rival Lehigh.
