Fencing Competes at MACFA Championships

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Lafayette fencing team traveled to Williamsburg, Va. to compete in the 2011 Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association Championships on Sunday. The Leopards, led by a 9-3 record from épéeist Andre Rafizadeh, placed eighth among 13 teams at the event.

Headed by Rafizadeh's strong performance, Lafayette's best finish with a fifth-place showing in épée. David Ecklemann was also solid at 7-5 in the school.

Sabreur Eric Luby also turned in an impressive record at 8-4 as the Leopards placed eighth in sabre and 10th in foil.

Haverford was the overall winner of the event with 85 victories - including a first-place finish in épée. The Fords were the only team to place in the top three in all three schools. Stevens Institute of Technology - winner in the sabre - claimed second place overall with 84 victories. Despite not winning any of the individual schools, Rutgers took third overall with 73 victories. Cornell was victories in foil.

Foilist Lisa DeJoseph, épéeists Noah Weiner, David Eckelmann and Andre Rafizadeh and sabreurs Darrell Washington and Eric Luby will all represent the Leopards at NCAA Regionals on Saturday, March 12. The all-day event will be held at Drew University in Madison, N.J.
