BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The rain-delayed softball series between Lafayette and Lehigh finally came to a close on Thursday afternoon with Lehigh taking both games of a doubleheader.
The four-game swing was originally scheduled for Friday, April 8 and Sunday, April 10 but had been postponed several times due to rain in the Lehigh Valley.
In the first game on Thursday, Lehigh used two big innings, scoring seven runs in the third and six in the fifth, to claim a 13-0 win.
Julie Fernandez (2-for-4, 4 RBI) doubled in three runs in the third inning and Carly Potock's (2-for-3, 6 RBI) two-out grand slam followed to give Lehigh all the offense it needed.
The Mountain Hawks managed 10 hits, and just four of their 13 runs were earned. Lafayette starter Lauren Hasson, who struck out four, walked two and gave up two hits, took the loss. Rebecca Bliss allowed two hits in four innings to claim the victory.
The nightcap was more of the same as Lehigh jumped out to a 7-0 lead by the second inning in a 9-0 decision.
In the second inning, Lafayette starter Melissa Robinson (1.2 IP, 7R, 3ER, 1BB, 1K) gave up two triples, the second of which padded the Lehigh lead to 7-0. Lehigh put the game away in the fifth with two more runs in the fifth on a wild pitch and an error.
Stacey Dorn had two of the Leopards' four hits in the game, including a double. Ashley Quigley (5IP, 4H, 0R, 0BB, 0K) was the mound winner for Lehigh (21-15, 7-1).
Lafayette (2-29, 0-8) will have Friday off from game action before opening a four-game Patriot League weekend series with Army on Saturday at noon.
