EASTON, Pa.-The Lafayette golf team opened the 2011-12 season with a second place finish at the Navy Fall Invitational this weekend in Annapolis, Md. The Leopards posted a two-day score of 570 (+2), but were beaten by Delaware in a playoff after the Blue Hens finished the weekend 2-over par.
The 12-team tournament was held at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club, a par-72 course totaling 6,528 yards. Navy fielded three teams in the event, Gold (fourth place), White (T-fifth) and their U.S. Naval Academy squad (eighth). St. Francis Pa. finished third overall (583, +15), Brown tied for fifth and George Mason was seventh. La Salle, Saint Joesph's, George Washington and McDaniel rounded out the field, in that order.
Josh Feinberg and
Mike Zausmer led the way for Lafayette, as each carded identical even par scores of 71 on Saturday and Sunday. The duo finished tied for fifth place with three other players.
Senior
Carter Rufe, who was tied for first after shooting a three-under 68 on Saturday, posted a 75 on Sunday, good for a tenth-place tie. Classmate
Rob Robertson also carded a plus-one 143 with rounds of 73 and 70.
Phil Rosengarden made his collegiate debut in the tournament, carding a 75 in his initial round and a 75 on the final 18 holes.
The Leopards are back on the course next weekend at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa.
