HARRISONBURG, Va. - No team has scored more than one goal against the Lafayette men's soccer team this season. Unfortunately for the Leopards, one was enough for host James Madison on Saturday night as Boyd Reid's goal in the 72nd minute propelled the Dukes to a 1-0 win.
The Leopards fall to 4-2-1 with the loss, snapping a four-match unbeaten streak. Victorious James Madison improves to 2-1-1.
Both teams had their chances, as each fired 10 shots and attempted eight corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Graham Heydt (2-2-1) made five saves for Lafayette, including a stop on a penalty kick. The Dukes' Justin Epperson stopped all four shots that he faced to record the shutout win.
The lone score of the match came at 71:49; a throw-in from Jason Gannon was redirected by Jimmy Simpson, whose header found Boyd. The striker buried a shot to give James Madison a 1-0 lead that it would not relinquish. The tally snapped the Leopards' run of 380:49 without surrendering a goal - a streak that included three shutout victories.
Peter Adubato, Blake Fink, Julian Plummer and Zach Winthrop took the Leopards' four shots on goal, though all four were stonewalled by Epperson.
The Leopards are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 24, opening Patriot League play at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium against Navy. The contest will be broadcast live on GoLeopards.com as the Leopards and Mids take the pitch at 3 p.m.
