EASTON, Pa. - A final round 67 helped senior
Rob Robertson to a share of the title at the Rehoboth Beach Fall Invite on Monday at Kings Creek Country Club. Following an opening round 72, Robertson recorded the low round at the 36-hole event to finish with a three-under 139 on the day. He finished tied with Penn's Marco Fortades and Navy's Tim Shield, but was awarded the medalist honors by virtue of his birdie on the 18th hole.
"It was nice to see Rob finish the second round with a great score," head coach Jim Hutnik said. "He's been so close to putting up a great number prior to today. The conditions were good and he made a lot of crucial putts. Overall it was a great weekend for Lafayette Golf individually. It was a first to have two medalists in two different tournaments."
As a team Lafayette finished seventh in the nine team field, closing the afternoon with a two-round total of 628 (+60). The Leopards combined to shoot 321 on the initial 18 holes and followed that effort up with a 307 in the second round of play.
Led by Shield's effort, Navy claimed the team victory at the 6,480 yard par-71 course. The Midshipmen (287, 285; 572) posted a four-over 36-hole score, 13 shots better than second place Mount Saint Mary's (290, 295; 585). Penn (292, 294; 586) finished third and Monmouth (296, 296; 592) was fourth.
Contributing to the team score for Lafayette was Doug Fernandez, who carded a 13-over 155 in the event. The freshman placed second on the squad, tied for 32nd overall, after a first round 74.
Rounding out the scoring for the Maroon and White was Chip Culp (85, 81; 166) and Matthew Kramer (90, 78; 168). Culp's plus-24 ranked him 48th and Kramer's 26-over put him in 50th place.
Lafayette returns to action on Oct. 15, when it travels to Bedminster, N.J. for the opening round of the Barnabas Health Intercollegiate.
