EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette volleyball team fell to Holy Cross in its season finale on Saturday afternoon in straight sets, 25-23, 25-19 and 25-16.
The Holy Cross match was Senior Day inside Kirby Sports Center as the team honored co-captains Sarah Frohnapfel and Kaitlynn Zoller, as well as defensive specialist Fiorella Bellini and outside hitter Alexandra Russo.
Frohnapfel led the senior group with 30 assists, four kills and one dig. Zoller had six kills and seven digs, while Bellini notched a team-high three service aces and Russo added a kill and three digs. Junior Karissa Ciliento was one dig away from a double-double, tabbing nine digs and 11 kills.
A kill from Holy Cross' Liz Ashton forced a timeout from head coach Terri Dadio Campbell as the Leopards dug an early hole, 20-14. The timeout seemed to work as the squad ripped off nine of the next 13 points to pull within one at 24-23. However, a kill from Emily Oliver finished off the first for the Crusaders, 25-23.
The second was even early on as a Ciliento kill tied it up at nine apiece. Holy Cross made a run, pushing the lead to 18-13, but Lafayette stormed back, down just one at 20-19 when Holy Cross called timeout. Out of the break, the Crusaders rallied with five in a row to end the set, 25-19.
The third set was all Holy Cross. The Crusaders won the first seven points and never looked back, taking the third and the match, 25-16. Bellini notched all three of her aces in the third.
The Lafayette volleyball team finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 9-17 and went 2-12 in the Patriot League.
