PHILADELPHIA - Lafayette came away on the winning side of a 3-2 decision over Penn on Friday evening at Rhodes Field. A pair of first half goals and another in the 70th minute proved to be enough as Lafayette held on for its first win of the season.

Lafayette (1-1-0) jumped on the Quakers early, scoring in the 12th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Alec Golini gave Lafayette the early advantage, and scored the first goal of the season, when he took a pass on the right side, carried 15 yards and deposited a shot in the back of the net past Penn keeper Tyler Kinn on the near side.

Not five minutes later, Penn (0-1-0) answered Lafayette's goal with a marker of its own, capitatlizing on a long free kick. The Quakers' Alex Reddy put the direct kick behind Lafayette goalie Nathan McDonald to knot the score at a goal apiece.

The visitors regained the lead in the 33rd minute on Blake Fink's ninth career goal. After a Penn foul, the senior scored on a 25-yard free kick in the upper right corner and the Maroon and White took a 2-1 lead. Eight minutes later, Quentin Anson's diving header was stopped by Kinn, and Lafayette took a one goal lead into the locker room.

Nine minutes into the second half, Lafayette maintained its advantage by successfully defending three consecutive Penn corners. The first two attempts were headed away from danger, prior to the third going across the goal line for a Leopards' goal kick.

After surviving Penn's early second-half pressure, Fink impacted Lafayette's third goal in the 70th minute. His shot was saved by Kinn, but the rebound bounced in front where Tom McCutcheon put it in the back of the net.

A handful of cards were given in the match, as Peter Adubato (33'), Zach Winthrop (62') and Josh Brown (77') were booked for Lafayette, while Penn picked up three of its own. Fink was shown a sraight red card in the 78th minute, forcing Lafayette to play a man down for the final 12 minutes.

The Leopards survived Penn's offensive attack, giving up a goal with 11 seconds to play to Travis Cantrell and held on for the 3-2 win.

McDonald finished with seven saves, a new career-high for the junior, including three after Fink's departure prior to surrendering the late goal to Cantrell.

Penn held the advantage statistically in the contest, outshooting Lafayette 16-12 (9-8 on goal) and earned five corners to the Leopards' three.

Lafayette completes its three-game road trip on Sunday against Quinnipiac at 1 p.m.

Notes:

Golini's goal (12') was the second of his career.

McCutcheon's goal (70') was the second of his career.

Lafayette won its first game when giving up two goals to an opponent since Sept. 28, 2010, a 3-2 double-overtime win against NJIT.
