EASTON, Pa.- The Lafayette volleyball team dropped its third match of the season Saturday, falling to Coppin State 3-2, in the first match of three at Kirby Sports Center.

After narrowly securing a 26-24 first set, the Leopards cruised to a 25-16 set win in the second. The rest of the match, however, belonged to the Eagles, as set scores of 25-15, 25-13, and 15-11 decided Lafayette's fate.

The Leopard attack was led by sophomore Danielle Towslee and junior Karissa Ciliento, each with eight kills apiece. Junior Molly Belcher handled the setting duties for most of the match, recording 20 assists, and sophomore Michelle Woodworth tallied 21 digs defensively. Towslee also contributed at the net with five blocks.

Coppin State came out firing in the first set, jumping out to a 19-11 lead and seeming to be on its way to an easy first set win. Lafayette had other ideas as a Towslee kill sparked a 13-5 run that pulled the Leopards even at 24-24. A kill from freshman Brianne Giangiobbe, followed by an Ariel Richard attack error for the Eagles led to the unlikely comeback first-set victory for Lafayette.

The Leopards rode that momentum into the second set opening up an 18-10 lead on another Giangiobbe finish. The squad managed to hold on as they cruised to a 25-16 set victory.

Unfortunately for the Leopards, the Eagles were not fazed by the 0-2 deficit. Coppin State came out in the third and fourth sets with renewed energy, taking each easily with 25-15 and 25-13 finals.

The fifth was back-and-forth before the changeover, as the Eagles held a slight 8-7 lead. However, a block by Coppin State's Bianca Chatman and an attack error from senior Kaitlynn Zoller gave the Eagles the space they needed to finish the fifth comfortably, 15-11.

The Leopards second match of the day will take place at 3 p.m. as they take on the St. Francis (N.Y.) Terriers in the final installment of the Tri-Match at Kirby Sports Center.
