PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Lafayette fencers began the 2013-2014 season by taking part in the Temple Open this past weekend. Senior Eric Luby was the top performer for the Leopards as he finished 26th out of 97 competitors in the saber event.

Also participating in the saber field was freshman Jake Burns who placed 45th. In the Epee event, junior Daniel Robitzski led the way for the Leopards coming in 30th out of 101 fencers. Sophomore David Jennings and freshman Conrad Stoerker finished 81st and 84th, respectively, and in men's foil, junior Phil Manna was the top finisher for Lafayette coming in 39th out of 87 competing foilists. Junior Jeremy Martin-Mills came in 41st while sophomore Joshua Kwak and freshmen Brendon Smith and Brent Staples rounded out the foil event for the Leopards coming in 69th, 78th, and T-79th, respectively.

For the women, senior Alexandra Knobel led the way with a 27th place finish in the foil event. Junior Colleen Way positioned right behind Knobel, coming in 28th out of 92 competitors. In the Epee event, sophomore Elizabeth Gill placed 76th while senior Caitlin Altomare tied for 77th out of 88 fencers. The lone saberus was senior Maureen Carey who came in 41st out of 79 competing sabreuses.

Lafayette begins the team season on Nov. 10 at the Vassar Invitational where the Leopards will face CCNY, Fairleigh Dickinson, Haverford, Hunter, Queens College, Sacred Heart, Stevens Institute of Technology, West Point, Yeshiva, and host Vassar.
