NEWARK, N.J. - Midway through the second half NJIT netted the game's only tally and the Highlanders eventually came away with a 1-0 win on Tuesday night at Lubetkin Field. It was NJIT's first-ever win in the series against Lafayette.

Following a scoreless initial 45 minutes in which neither team registered a shot on goal, the scoring chances increased after the intermission. Nate Arronson was credited with the game's first on-target attempt six minutes into the second half, but his go was stopped by NJIT keeper Alexander Czempik.

In the 57th minute an opportunity for NJIT (6-9-2) failed to break the deadlock when Ansel Ueshiro was turned away by Nathan McDonald. Lafayette's keeper finished the night with two saves in the loss.

The Maroon and White (4-5-8) had a pair of chances to put one past Czempik in the 64th minute, but the first shot by Arronson was stopped and then Jeff McLaughlin missed high to keep the match tied.

Less than four minutes later, NJIT found the game winner when Victor Kausch set up Joshua Mercer. Kausch sent a pass from the right flank to Mercer and he unleashed a left footed shot that put the Highlanders ahead.

Trying to find the equalizer, Lafayette ramped up the pressure in the final 15 minutes. Two unsuccessful corner kicks preceded Tom McCutcheon's header that was saved by Czempik in the 78th minute before two more saves were made on Ryan Dodds and Ryan Egan with less than 10 minutes to play. Czempik made five saves in all as the Highlanders held on for the win.

Overall Lafayette held an 11-7 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Lafayette closes its regular season on Saturday night when the team travels to Baltimore, Md. to take on Loyola. Kickoff from Ridley Athletic Complex is slated for 7 p.m. and the game can be seen live on the Patriot League Network.
