LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lafayette men's swimming and diving team topped American 144-143 on Saturday in a quad meet with Navy and Bucknell at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium.

Bucknell and Navy beat the Lafayette men by identical scores of 249-49. The one-point American win comes two weeks after Lafayette went down to the wire and tied Loyola (150-150).

The Leopards started the meet by winning the 200 medley relay against American. Evan Newbold, Russell Lambert, Joshua Hitchings and Robert Lowery swam a time of 1:38.21.

In the 200 butterfly, Christopher Wickwire (1:55.67) and Adam Gill (2:00.74) claimed the top two spots. Lowery and Wickwire achieved similar results in the 200 freestyle, finishing 1-2 vs. AU in 48.38 and 48.95, respectively.

The Leopards' success in the butterfly continued in the 100-yard event. Wickwire (51.38), Newbold and Hitchings garnered the top three positions. Individually, Gill won the 500 freestyle, touching the wall in 4:49.73.

Junior diver Ivan Basurto captured the one and three-meter diving events in the dual meet with American.

"The men really scrapped for every point we could. It seemed every event American won we went 2,3,4 which means they only gained one point," said Lafayette head coach Jim Dailey. "For every event we won, we went 1-2 or 1-3. It's been two meets in a row that it comes down to having to perform well to win the meet or at least tie."

The Lafayette women were edged by American (155-143) while also dropping dual meet decisions to Bucknell (248-52) and Navy (243-55).

In the dual meet with American, the Leopards got off to a tough start, as the 200 medley relay team was disqualified for a relay take off, one of four teams disqualified in the event.

Jackie Andrews was the standout performer for the Leopards vs. American, securing top finishes in the 200 butterfly ( 2:11.58) and 100 fly (59.32).

Lafayette also excelled in the freestyle races. Jacklyn Johnson (1:58.69) and Kate Durkan (2:01.84) finished first and second in the 200 free while Megan Kaveney won the 50 free (24.72).

Durkan, Kaveney Lauren Berry and Allie Berger were also part of the winning 200 free relay corps which clocked a time of 1:40.42 (the fourth best team time among all four squads).

The Leopards went 1-2-3 in the 200 backstroke against American on solid swims from Meridith Guro (2:13.16), Abby Floyd-Jones and Sydney Pahmer. Junior Jane Kuntz added a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke.

"The women continue to compete well. It was a back and forth meet coming down to the very end of the meet," Dailey said of the American matchup. "We are performing better than we have at this point in any other past season. Lehigh is next up and I expect our women to drop a lot of time."

The Leopards return to action with the Lehigh dual meet on Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa.
