Easton, Pa. - The Leopards lost to visiting NJIT inside Kirby Sports Center on Wednesday night in non-league volleyball action. Lafayette was led by Danielle Towslee and Elizabeth Walsh with eight kills apiece.
The Leopards moved to 4-12 this season, while the Highlanders improved to 5-13. Jet Manzi tallied seven kills for Lafayette, while Lauren Pisauro had a match-high 14 digs. Tori Smith handed out 13 assists, and Samantha Volk dished out eight assists in the loss. NJIT was led by Valerie Carroll's match-high 10 kills and Alyssa Armada's 35 assists.
The Maroon and White jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set on kills from Katy Rooney, Manzi and Walsh. NJIT answered and was able to tie the set at 10. A 6-3 run from the Highlanders gave them their first lead of the frame, 16-13. The Leopards climbed back into the game, pulling within a point at 21-20, but a four-point spurt from NJIT closed out the opening set.
In the second game, NJIT ran out to a 13-4 lead before the Leopards closed the gap to 15-9 with a 5-2 run. Back-to-back kills from Walsh and Towslee forced a Highlander timeout midway through the set. Kills from Rooney and Towslee, and a block from the duo pulled within three, 23-20. NJIT won the next two points and took the second set, 25-20.
Lafayette took a 7-2 lead to start the third set, as a pair of Towslee kills and an ace from Kelly Flynn highlighted the spurt. An 8-1 run from NJIT pushed the Highlanders ahead, 9-8, forcing a Lafayette timeout. The teams exchanged points with Flynn and Walsh tallying kills to keep the set tied at 14. Another 7-2 spurt from the Highlanders gave NJIT a 21-16 lead late in the game. The Highlanders were able to hold off the Leopards and take the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-0.
Patriot League play resumes for Lafayette on Saturday as the squad travels to Bucknell.
