Bethlehem, Pa. – The Lafayette volleyball team fell on the road at Lehigh on Friday night. The Leopards were led by Elizabeth Walsh’s eight kills. Jet Manzi and Katherine Stevens finished with six and five kills, respectively for the Leopards.
Lafayette moved to 4-16 overall and 1-7 in Patriot League play, while Lehigh improved to 13-9 and 7-2 in League play.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first set, a 5-1 run, highlighted by an ace from Manzi and a block from Katy Rooney, gave the Leopards a 5-3 lead. The Mountain Hawks used a 10-3 run to take a 13-8 lead midway through the set. A 7-1 run from Lafayette on kills from Danielle Towslee and Elizabeth Walsh tied the game at 15. The teams exchanged points before Lehigh took the set 26-24.
Lehigh jumped out to an early 5-2 advantage in the second set. An ace from Stevens cut the lead to 9-7, but the Mountain Hawks maintained their lead with a 6-1 run. A kill from Rooney followed by a block from Brianne Giangiobbe and Stevens cut the deficit to 19-11. Trailing 23-13, the Leopards tallied five straight points on kills from Walsh and Stevens but Lehigh held off the Lafayette charge and took the second set, 25-18.
The Mountain Hawks opened the third game with a 5-0 spurt, but Lafayette fought back with a five-point run of its own, highlighted by kills from Manzi, Giangiobbe and Walsh. Lehigh pushed ahead12-8 before kills from Smith and Rooney trimmed the lead to 13-10. The Mountain Hawks pushed ahead, 17-11, before a block from Stevens and Giangiobbe cut the deficit to 17-14. Lehigh went on to score eight of the next ten points to take the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
Lafayette is back in action at Colgate on Sunday afternoon.
