Annapolis, Md. – The Lafayette volleyball team fell on the road Sunday afternoon at Navy, 3-0. The Leopards were led by Jet Manzi’s match-high nine kills.
Lafayette moved to 4-19 overall and 1-10 in Patriot League play. The Mids improved to 10-9 and 7-3 in league play. Samantha Volk handed out 13 assists, while Lauren Pisauro came up with a match-high 13 digs. Gaby Smith powered Navy with eight kills, and Star Steele and Rachel Fortner combined for 30 assists.
Navy jumped out to an early 14-4 lead in the first set, before back-to-back kills from Smith and Manzi trimmed the deficit to 17-9. Another Manzi kill and a block from Danielle Towslee and Katherine Stevens cut the Navy lead to 19-12. That was as close as the Leopards would get in the opening game, as the Mids took set one, 25-18.
The Mids took a 10-5 advantage to start the second frame, but the Leopards fought back and trimmed the Navy lead to 14-12 on a pair of solo blocks from Katy Rooney. Navy went on a 11-2 run to close out the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Kills from Manzi, Volk and Rooney tied the third set at nine. After the Mids pushed ahead, a kill from Tori Smith pulled Lafayette within a point, 14-13. A five-point run from Navy gave the Mids a 21-16 advantage, before a block from Towslee and a kill from Smith trimmed the deficit to 23-21. Navy held on, scoring two of the next three to win the set, 25-22 and the match, 3-0.
Lafayette hosts Patriot League leading American on Friday night at 7 p.m.
