EASTON, Pa. - Three first-half goals by Columbia put the Lafayette women's soccer team away early on Tuesday evening at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium, sinking the Leopards by a score of 4-0.
The goals came early and often for the Lions (7-3-5) as the 15th minute saw the opening goal of the contest. Finding space at the top right corner of the box, Columbia's Coleen Rizzo sent a powerful shot into the high, right corner of the net, beating Lafayette freshman goalkeeper Kelly O'Brien for the first tally.
Just two minutes later, Rizzo struck again as she found the back end of a 35-yard free kick into the box and headed it home for the 2-0 advantage.
Lafayette (5-11-0) finally recorded its first shot in the 23rd minute, but Columbia made another shot count just a minute later. After a corner was served into the box and pinballed around between Lafayette defenders and Columbia forwards, the ball finally found the foot of the Lions' Kerry Manion, who slotted it home to put the game out of reach midway through the first half, 3-0.
A 62nd minute tally by Caroline Militello put away any chance for a Lafayette comeback and the final buzzer sounded on a 4-0 defeat. O'Brien and sophomore Danielle Sedillo split time in goal with O'Brien picking up the loss to move to 1-3-0 on the year, making one save. Sedillo allowed one goal without a save in the second half of play.
On the other side, Columbia's Grace Redmon played the first half with little action, not allowing a goal and not recording a save, while Gabby Dubick, entering the game at halftime, made five saves to keep the Leopards off the board for the combined clean sheet. The Lions led the way in shots, 11-6, and Lafayette held the edge in corners, 6-5.
The Maroon and White finish off their 2014 campaign on Saturday, hosting Loyola for Senior Night at 7 p.m.
