Hempstead, N.Y. - Lafayette dropped its opening match of the season, 3-2, to Quinnipiac on Friday afternoon. The Leopards were led by sophomore Jet Manzi with a team-high 10 kills.
Elizabeth Walsh was second on the team with nine kills, followed by Katy Rooney with seven kills. Freshman Tori Smith handed out 30 assists during the match, while Lauren Pisauro had a match-high 20 digs.
With the score tied at 19 in the first set, the Leopards used a 6-1 run to close out the set and take a 1-0 lead on the Bobcats. Back-to-back blocks from Giangiobbe and Flynn capped off the spurt and gave Lafayette a 25-20 opening set win.
The second set feature eight ties and five lead changes as neither team was a to build more than a four-point lead. A service ace from Tori Smith pushed the Leopard lead to 20-16, but Quinnipiac tallied four of the next five points to pull within one, 21-20. A pair of kills from Rooney helped Lafayette take set two, 25-23, and build a 2-0 lead.
Quinnipiac took the next two sets, 25-21 and 25-14 to set up a decisive fifth set.
In the fifth set the Leopards took an early 6-3 lead on kills by Giangiobbe and Flynn. The Bobcats tied the final set at nine and went on to take the fifth set, 15-11, and the match 3-2.
The Leopards return to action Friday night for their second match of the Hofstra Invitational against the host school at 7:30 p.m.
