EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette men's soccer junior defender Eric West flicked home the only goal of the game in the 59th minute to push the Leopards past Saint Peter's in the season opener on Friday evening at Oaks Stadium.

Senior Tom McCutcheon worked his way down the left side of the field and into a 1v1 situation with a defender. McCutcheon worked a foul call, setting up senior Alec Golini for a free-kick opportunity into the box, which he opted to send in low. Golini's ball connected with the foot of West, who slotted it past Saint Peter's goalkeeper David Giddings for the lone score, his first career tally.

Senior Sandy Leavy made his first start in goal since 2012 and notched his first career shutout, making four saves. On the other side, Giddings posted two saves and one goal allowed in the full 90 minutes of action.

The game was a flurry of cards as a total of six bookings were handed out, including two of the red variety. The Peacocks' Jack Pounce notched his second yellow card in the 81st minute earning him a send-off, while Lafayette's McCutcheon was ejected in the 87th minute on a straight red card.

The Leopards trailed in shots, 8-7, and corner kicks, 5-2, but made the most of their limited scoring opportunities. West and McCutcheon led the offense with two shots apiece, while freshman Daniel Felman, sophomore Ryan Egan, and senior Alec Golini recorded one shot each for the Maroon and White.

Just moments into the game, it looked like the Peacocks were going to get on the board as Ezequiel Cei found space at the top of the box and sent a shot toward an outstretched Leavy. Leavy got a hand on it, but the ball remained sputtering toward the goal mouth behind him before senior Julian Plummer came to the rescue and cleared it away.

Limited opportunities were the story for the rest of the opening half and the beginning of the second before West's goal opened the game up. A skirmish at midfield in the 81st minute led to three bookings and an offensive flurry toward the end by Saint Peter's was kept under control as the Leopards held on for the 1-0 victory.

Next up for Lafayette is a trip to New Brunswick, N.J. for its first road matchup of the year against Rutgers on Sunday at 1 p.m.
