Hempstead, N.Y. - Lafayette earned its first win of the season, 3-1, over St. Francis Brooklyn at the Hofstra Invitational on Saturday morning. Lafayette was led again by another Jet Manzi double-double, 11 kills and 14 digs.
Sophomore Kelly Flynn had a match-high nine blocks for the Leopards, while freshman Tori Smith handed out 36 assists in the match. Another rookie Elizabeth Walsh was second on the team with eight kills, followed by sophomore Maggie Evans with seven. St. Francis Brooklyn (0-3) was led by Brooke Haliscak's nine kills.
The Leopards opened up the match with a 5-0 lead courtesy of two kills from Katy Rooney. St. Francis came back and took the lead at 20-19, but Lafayette used a 6-0 run late in the opening set to take it 25-20. Manzi had a pair of kills in the spurt, while Evans came up with a kill and a block to help the Leopards take a 1-0 lead.
Service aces from Katie Kidder and Melanie Weiss and kills from Kelly Flynn, Rooney and Manzi saw the Leopards jump out to an early 7-2 lead in the second set. Lafayette continued to lead for a majority of the frame, but a late run from the Terriers gave them the set, 25-23, to tie the match at a game apiece.
Three straight aces from Weiss early in the third gave the Leopards a 5-4 advantage. Lafayette build a 21-16 lead as Rooney and Evans teamed up for a block. The Maroon and White were able to hold off a late from push from the Terriers with a block from Manzi and Flynn, followed by a service ace from Manzi to win the third set 26-24 and take a 2-1 lead.
After dropping the first point, the Leopards used a 5-0 run highlighted by an ace from Lauren Pisauro and a kill from Evans to take control of the fourth set. Lafayette never looked back as it led the rest of the game. Walsh capped off the match with a pair of kills to give the Leopards a 3-1 win.
The Leopards are back in action at 3 p.m. in their final match of the Hofstra Invitational against Santa Clara.
