EASTON, Pa. -Three interceptions, including two for touchdowns in the first half, sparked the Lafayette football team to a 50-3 drubbing of Robert Morris on Saturday evening at Fisher Stadium.

The Lafayette defense held Robert Morris to 108 offensive yards, four first downs and stopped the Colonials on all 16 third-down conversion attempts. In the ground game, Lafayette held The Sports Network National Freshman of the Week Rameses Owens to 17 yards after he ran for 199 yards a week prior.

Offensively, it was Ross Scheuerman's night despite the fact that his playing status was in doubt entering the game after suffering an injury in week one. The senior tailback rushed 22 times for 173 yards and had two catches for 31 yards and a touchdown. He moved into sixth place for career rushing at Lafayette with 2,549, surpassing Tony Giglio (2,519) and Jonathan Hurt (2,531).

The Leopards came out of the tunnel ready to put their week one loss to Sacred Heart behind them, recording a pair of interceptions for touchdowns. With 6:51 to play in the first quarter, senior safety Jared Roberts picked off Robert Morris QB Luke Brumbaugh at his 36-yard line. Roberts sprinted down the sideline, sidestepped a defender at the two and walked across the goal line to give the Leopards an early 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing drive, it was a familiar scene as Brumbaugh (11-23-3 for 60 yards) dropped back and his throw was undercut by junior cornerback Darrell Crawford. Drew Reed (14-26-2 for 149 and 2 TD) and the Lafayette offense took over at the 16-yard line. It took just two plays for the Leopards to convert as Reed ran it around the right side and found the edge, crossing into the endzone with 5:34 to play in the first.

The Lafayette defensive made things worse for the Colonials, stopping the next drive after four plays while forcing a punt. The snap flew over the head of the RMU punter and resulted in a safety and a 16-0 lead at the end of one quarter.

The Lafayette momentum showed no signs of slowing as the second quarter began. On the first play out of the break, Brumbaugh was intercepted for a third time by Lafayette junior linebacker Mark Dodd. Dodd returned the pick 29 yards for the score, the Leopards second pick-six in just over 15 minutes of game action.

Robert Morris finally broke through the Lafayette defense with 11:01 to play in the second as a 24-yard field goal put the Colonials on the board. An answer from Lafayette sophomore kicker Ryan Forrester closed out the half with the Maroon and White in front, 26-3.

As the second half opened, Scheuerman churned out 30 yards on five carries that led to a Forrester 37-yard field goal. The Leopards' next offensive drive Scheuerman accounted for nearly all of the offense, managing carries of eight, four and 25 yards before catching a 15-yard strike from Reed to lead 36-3.

Scheuerman came out of the game on the third drive of the third quarter, giving way to freshman TB DeSean Brown. Brown picked up 60 yards on the ground, the bulk of it coming on a 47-yard scamper to the Robert Morris 16. Reed found Tim Vangelas for a 15-yard TD

The Leopards added a 17-yard touchdown run by Adin Greenfield in the fourth quarter with 11:37 left to close out the Leopards' first 50-point performance since their 50-28 win at Lehigh to end the 2013 regular season.

Lafayette's schedule will take a tougher turn in week three when the Leopards travel to No. 16/19 William & Mary (2-1) on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.

NOTES: It was the largest margin of victory for Lafayette since a 49-0 win over Marist to open the 2003 season.

The team safety was the first for the Leopards since Oct. 30, 2010.
