WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth posted two goals in the opening half and added a third in the 66th minute to drop the Lafayette women's soccer team on Sunday evening, 3-0.
After a back-and-forth opening few minutes, the Hawks' Erica Murphy found space down the side of the Lafayette defense. Murphy's cross found the foot of Rachelle Ross, who slotted it past sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Sedillo for the early 1-0 advantage in the 16th minute.
Following 20 minutes of sustained pressure, Monmouth struck again in the 37th minute when Monique Goncalves played a wide ball to the foot of Kristen Brett. Brett's cross connected with the head of Alexix McTamney and into the back of the net for the second goal of the game.
The third and final score came in the 66th minute when Ross' cross in front across the goalline was finished by Goncalves to bring the final tally to 3-0.
Sedillo made five saves in the game to push her record to 3-3 on the year, while Monmouth's Jocelyn McCoy and Nicole D'Agostino combined for one save in the shutout as the Hawks moved to 5-2 on the year. Monmouth led the way in shots, 21-4, and corner-kick opportunities, 9-1.
